Trip description

Combined stays usually require transit through Nassau, as inter-island connections are rare and transport is available from Nassau. For example, we could consider a Nassau + Eleuthera + Harbour Island coupling, or Nassau + Long Island + Cat Island. There are also direct connections between Grand Bahama Island - Bimini, and Grand Bahama Island - Abaco, as detailed in the itinerary below

Day 1 : Arrival/Rest

Arrival at Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. Rental of a car. Transfer to a hotel in Port Lucaya if you like the animation, or a little further away from the Ocean Reef & Yacht Club for a slightly more family atmosphere. Afternoon rest to digest flight and 6 hours lag with France.




Day 2 : Freeport

Morning in Freeport, visit the Garden of the Groves, Perfume Factory, then direction the Port Lucaya Market Place for an international lunch in a festive atmosphere. In the afternoon, diving or meeting with dolphins via the UNEXSO centre, an unforgettable excursion! In the evening, authentic and inescapable fish fry at Smith Point if you fall on a Wednesday.




Day 3 : Visit of Grand Bahama Island

Tour of the island. From Freeport, head first towards the wild and sparsely populated eastern part of the island. Visit Lucayan National Park, its underwater cavities, mangroves and its famous Gold Rock Beach - the film Pirates of the Caribbean was shot just around the corner! Then continue towards the eastern tip to discover the few fishing villages dotted here and there, then return to your steps towards Freeport and West End. Visit of the Bahamian Brewery, where the Sands, one of the two national beers, is brewed. If you do not wish to rent a vehicle, agencies organize daily tours, by jeep for example, including some activities.




Day 4 : Idleness

Beach, rest and possibly leisure activities around Freeport.




Day 5 : Departure for Abaco Island



Departure for Marsh Harbour, Abaco. Possible rental of a car. Visit of the small town and its marina and then direction the new village of Schooner Bay in the south. Discovery of the site and night at the Sandpiper Inn.




Day 6 : Visit of Abaco



By car or via an agency such as The Great Abaco Express, tour of the island and its main points of interest: Sandy Point, Cherokee Sound, Little Harbour and Pete's Pub & Gallery, Bahama Palm Shore for observation of the parrots of Abaco, the farm and laboratory of Abaco Neem, some well hidden water holes, etc.




Day 7 : Hope Town and its mythical lighthouse

Departure for Hope Town via Marsh Harbour. On site, visit the lighthouse, the Wyannie Malone museum, in the ruelles and impasses of this village with a doll house.




Day 8 : Diving and relaxation

Beach and snorkeling on the side of Hope Town Harbour Lodge.




Day 9 : Treasure Cay



Return to the main island of Abaco, this time towards north and Treasure Cay. Visit of the village and afternoon on its long sandy beach.




Day 10 : Green Turtle Cay



Excursion to Green Turtle Cay. Visit of the village, the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Gardenfrom the Albert Lowe Museum, and a look at the cemetery. At the end of the day, return to Treasure Cay.




Day 11 : Change of island

Morning departure for Bimini via Freeport. Arrived at destination, rest and relaxation in the vicinity of the hotel before visiting the following day.




Day 12 : Meeting with dolphins



Morning discovery of South Bimini, with a nature walk to the fountain of youth, and the exciting Shark Lab (visit on request the day before). In the afternoon, go to the Neal Watson diving centre for an outing to the open sea to meet wild dolphins.

Rent a golf cart and visit the landmarks of Bimini North, marked by the memory of Hemingway and Martin Luther King. Not to be missed in particular Dolphin Housethe small museum of Bimini and Ansil Saunders' house. In the afternoon, fishing boat excursion in the mangrove of Bimini East.

Back to Freeport, then in France, the head loaded with memories and the camera filled with sublime pictures.

The geographical location of the Bahamas and its proximity to the American continent make it easy to plan an extension. Change of atmosphere and style with a flea jump from Miami to Nassau in 40 minutes; after California there is no need to fly to Hawaii, you can reduce the trip back to Europe with a mini-stay in the Bahamas.
