"Corcovado" is a deformation of the word 'hunchback' in Portuguese to designate the mountain, which dominates Rio from its 710 meters and on which stands the giant statue (38 m high, 28 m wide) of Christ the Redeemer made by the French sculptor Paul Landowski. A true symbol protecting the entrance to Guanabara Bay, the Sugarloaf Tower dominates Rio from its 395 meters and offers an exceptional panorama of the city: on one side, the coast with the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon and their curves. perfect blessed by Christ the Redeemer and on the other side Flamengo, the town center, the bay and opposite the town of Niteroi ... Sugar Loaf owes its name to the resemblance of its shape to a "sugar loaf", the form in which sugar used to be. It is here that the valiant Portuguese navigators joined in January 1502, and believing they were dealing with the mouth of a river, baptized the site "River of January" or "Rio de Janeiro"!
