There are two distinct seasons which vary depending on the region and altitude:The rainy season, from December to early May in the Andes (Sierra), and from January to the end of April on the coast. Precipitation is then almost daily and usually occurs early in the morning, or in the afternoon. In Amazon, rain can fall throughout the year with higher rainfall between April and June. The dry season extends from June to November in the Andes and from May to December on the coast. With climate change, however, it is difficult (or impossible) to forecast weather. The high tourist season extends from June to September and from November to the end of March. The coast beaches and the Galapagos are popular with Ecuadorian holidaymakers in December, February and March. In addition, many popular and/or religious festivals take place throughout the year during which tourist peaks are held (Holy Week in April, Inti Raymi in June, Mama Negra in October or November, etc.).
The infinite spacesDespite its small size, Ecuador has a sense of space and grandeur in each of its regions. Crossing the country from the north to the south, the Andes majestueuse of the Andes (or Sierra) extends to both the vast green plains, colourful lagoons, volcanoes, volcans snow and plantations, which conquer steep valleys. On the Pacific coast from Esmeraldas to Salinas, long stretches of golden or grey sand border steep cliffs. Finally, covering almost half of the territory, the Amazon contains huge forests. The mythical AmazonThe Oriente is a dense and inextricable world from which it is not relaxed. Such an adventure on the Amazon territory marks the spirits forever so much the sensations are increased and many discoveries. Lush vegetation and extraordinary wildlife, the forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries of wild life.Extreme activities and thrillsIn Ecuador, diversity of the landscape allows for a multitude of activities. The country is conducive to treks: you can burn volcanoes to incandescent craters and mountains at snow-capped summits... At Baños and Misahaulli, at the gates of the Oriente, you will try canoeing, rafting, canopy (Tyrolean) or canyoning. Surfers will win the best spots on the Pacific coast (Montañita). If you organise your trip online with a local agency, it will be able to establish a tailor-made programme of activities in Ecuador.
Since dollarization, the cost of living has increased considerably in Ecuador, and neighbouring countries are experiencing the same phenomenon, including Peru. Nevertheless, the cost of living remains very affordable, being two to three times less expensive than in France.Small budget: from US $ 20 to US $ 35 per day.Medium budget: from US $ 40 to US $ 60 per day.Major Budget: from US $ 80 to US $ 150 per day.FormalitésAfter three months, a visa is required to stay in Ecuador. In short, European Union nationals do not need visas and do not pay entry fees. They need only a passport. However, a large part of flights to Ecuador from Europe go through the United States, so Europeans must be equipped with the new biometric passports and have completed the ESTA form on the website (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov), with a fee of USD 14. Finally, if you travel with your cat or dog, it requires a passport also (a period of quarantine is also often obligatory and you will have to complete specific formalities). If you go to the Galapagos, you will have to pay an entrance fee of US $ 100 per person, payable only in cash, to which $ 10 USD is added.
Spanish is the official language of the country, but the native languages are still very practiced (quichua, shuar...). However, it is extremely rare to meet a person who is not bilingual. English is generally practiced in tourist areas. As for French, some members of the high social classes speak it, but it will be of little use outside the words close to Spanish.Learning language: there are different ways to learn a few basics of language and the offer for self-learning can be done on different media: CD, DVD, exercise books or even directly on the Internet.
Ecuador's currency, sugar, disappeared in September 2000 because of chronic instability. The national currency is now the US dollar.
The dollar is divided into 100 centavos or centimos. If the tickets are American, Ecuador hits its own coins: 1 centimo, 5 centimos, 10 cts, 25 cts, 50 cts and 1 dollar, but American coins are also running smoothly. However, too damaged bank tickets can be refused. Tickets are 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and US $ 100. The currency is so high compared to the cost of daily commodities that currency often lacks... Do not pay with a large ticket for 3 vegetables at the market, at the risk of waiting for some good minutes that the seller finds from the small currency (cambio or:). Note that US $ 50 and US $ 100 bills are examined with suspicion, many merchants fear they are false.
Ecuador, taking into account its countless geographical contrasts, alone draws an inventory of all the world's climates. Thus, in view of the elevation differences, it was observed that between two points between 12 and 10 ? km, the difference in precipitation could be in the order of 1 ? 000 mm mm. Like the rest of the planet, Ecuador is suffering the consequences of climate change and the various seasons are becoming less and less marked.
