Monténégro : When to go ?

Montenegro intends to become a privileged destination for the Mediterranean, like its neighbor, Croatia. And if on the map this country looks very small, stuck between Albania, Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, it offers an astonishing variety of landscapes. Country of mountains and valleys cashed, Montenegro is a destination of choice for lovers of nature and hiking. In a small area there are five national parks, beaches, a shortened coastline with fascinating beauty and very sparsely urbanized mountains. Montenegro also has an architectural heritage of unsuspected diversity, the fruit of a cross-chasing of kingdoms and empires, from the Illyrians to the Austrians, to the Greeks, the Romans and the Turks. To best discover Montenegro, a country still booming at the tourist level, a local agency is a good choice: experienced accommodation will organize live accommodation with you, ideal for discovering all aspects of Montenegro at the heart of its authenticity. In the mountainous areas of the north of the country, snow can remain until the end of June and start falling early in October. Équipés hikers will therefore need to focus on July and August to explore the mountains of Montenegro. For winter sports fans, the season runs from December to April. In the south of the country (Adriatic coast), the climate remains pleasant in summer thanks to the influence of the sea, even if temperatures can reach 38 ° C. Spring and autumn are the best periods to visit this southern part of the country. Read: the capital and its surroundings are experiencing stifling heats in summer, while Cetinje remains very pleasant (20 ° C average temperature in summer).

Monténégro : Go with a local agency

A generous natureMontenegro is a destination of choice for lovers of large spaces and explorations off all too often travelled trails. The country is mainly mountainous, but it has an astonishing diversity of landscapes with regard to its area. Thus, coves lined with olive-lined pebbles of Bar, only one hour's drive to find themselves in a fjord landscape worthy of northern latitudes.A welcoming coastlineA little less than 300 kilometres long, the Montenegrin coastline has nothing to envy from the beauty of its neighbour, Croatia. Unlike the rest of the country, this part of Montenegro enjoys a very mild climate. In the mouths of Kotor, a 1 500-metre altitude karst mountain chain, plunges into the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic.A diverse Historical LegacyLocated in the heart of the Balkan peninsula, Montenegro has experienced the foreign influence of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish, Venetian and Austro-Hungarian cultures over the centuries. On the coast, and in particular in the mouths of Kotor, these influences have superimposed to form an architectural ensemble of little known richness. The medieval city of Kotor and its cathedral Saint-Triphon, which combine the Byzantine and Gothic forms, are the most beautiful example. By organising a tailor-made stay with a local agency in Montenegro, you can benefit from the services of an experienced local guide that will take you to discover the most beautiful sites of this Montenegrin heritage.Montenegro is no longer a cheap country for daily spending, meals and housing and some hotels tend to align with Western prices. Transport may, however, be even more expensive, as we wish to go out of the beaten paths, since it is often necessary to rent off-road vehicles to reach the most remote mountain areas. It is, however, particularly economic in terms of bus and train lines. Some price ideas before leaving:Coffee: from 0,50 to 1,10 €.A soda: € 1,50 to € 2.A meal: (dish + drink + salad) from 7 to 15 ? €.A local hamburger: 1 to 2 ? €.One night at the hotel ?: about 20 ? € per person in summer. One night in the inhabitant: 8 to 15 ? € per person in summer.FormalitésNationals of European Union countries do not need visas for stays in Montenegro less than 90 days. Spoken languages

Learning language: There are different ways to learn a few basics of language (Serbian, for the moment) and the offer for self-learning can be done on different media: CD, DVD, exercise book or even directly on the Internet (www.srpskijezik.edu.rs, www.loecsen.com, ilanguages.org/fr/serbian.php, voyage.linternaute.com, apprendre-le-serbe-facile.e-monsite.com). To find out more about language, you can order some new pocket books dedicated to this language in a large bookseller. The universities of the Sorbonne (Paris IV) and Bordeaux offer full training, but if we are pressed, better contact the Institute of oriental languages located in Paris (Inalco). This institute provides evening courses for employees and prepares very practical books.

Currency

Montenegro's official currency has been the euro since 2002. The country is not part of the Euro area. This means extra costs if you withdraw or pay with your credit card. As in all countries using this currency, the banknotes are in cuts of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 € and coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1 and 2 €. If Montenegro uses the euro, it does not have any species hit on its own, since it is not yet part of the European Union.

Weather

As a country of mountains bordered by the sea, Montenegro is under the influence of two types of climates. The littoral zone offers a Mediterranean climate with mild and humid winters and warm and dry summers. The north of the country has a continental climate with cold, rigorous winters and heavy snowfall. Podgorica and its environs have a degraded Mediterranean climate (more rainy winters and warmer summers than on the coast).
