New York of Woody Allen

Trip description

The favorite American filmmaker of the French people is completely from New York. An inexhaustible source of inspiration, his favourite city sets the scene for the majority of his films. This is evidenced by the first sequence shot of Manhattan (1979), a true tribute to the spectacular beauty of this city. You can find the themes that are very important to Woody Allen in this rather autobiographical film: jazz, friendship, writing and of course, women... "Fame brought me a big advantage: women who say no to me are more beautiful than ever." Here's a non-exhaustive list of places gathered through the scenes of Annie Hall, Manhattan or Broadway Danny Rose that allows, in the footsteps of the director, to discover among the most emblematic places of Big Apple.

It is at the far end of Brooklyn, in this Jewish quarter, lost and residential, that everything begins. "I have made mistakes. First, I was born. First mistake! "Allen Königsberg (the true name of Woody Allen) grew up there. He already makes his classmates of Midwood High School laugh, who inspired him this joke: "I was expelled from high school for cheating during a metaphysical exam; I could read my neighbour's minds. " Apart from that, the tourist interest in this area is practically non-existent, except for the famous pizzeria Di Fara in Brooklyn. M° Avenue J (line Q).

It's in Coney Island, this Russian district known for its beach and its carnival, that the scenes of its oscar-winning film Annie Hall were shot. M° Coney Island (line W).

Several restaurants have been immortalized by the woody camera. Carnegie Deli, this deli appears in Broadway Danny Rose. Dean & Deluca, scenes of the film Husbands and Wives take place in this SoHo café. As for John's Pizzeria, the filmmaker is not the only one to appreciate this old family and popular pizzeria in the Village. Al Pacino, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. and Rudolph Giuliani are or have been among its clients. John's appears in Manhattan, in the scene where the young Mariel Hemingway announces to Woody Allen that she starts studying in London. In Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Alda offers Woody a job at the elegant Tavern on the Green, the most famous restaurant of Central Park, mythical but unfortunately closed since 2010. And the wedding ceremony closing the film is shot at no less famous Waldorf Astoria hotel. Last but not least, two fetish addresses of mysterious murder in Manhattan (1993). The New York Public Library, romantic place No. 2 in the movie! " I would like to end with a message of hope. I do not have any. In exchange, would two messages of despair suit you? " (woody Allen).
