Plantations through the Mississippi River


Trip description

Plantation Road or River Road is a succession of highway dotted with ancient plantations that have survived since the 18th and 19th centuries. We advise you to visit two or three per day, so that you don't mix the stories of each one. Plan to sleep in one of these several plantations to get the most of their atmosphere.

Day 1: Arrival in New Orleans

Day 3: St. Francisville

Day 4: Alexandria and Natchitoches

Day 5: Natchitoches and Cheneyville

You arrive late in the day and put your bags in the Garden District, New Orleans. 




Day 2 : West of Nola



Go west and go through Destrehan Plantation, then by the beautiful San Francisco Plantation. Madewood or Houmas House are two other options. 




Day 3 : St. Francisville

The next day, head to St. Francisville, where you will see plantations of cotton and indigo, whose appear sometimes a little different from the southern red cane one of Baton Rouge. Night near Baton Rouge.




Day 4 : Alexandria and Natchitoches

You make a short tour in Natchez in Mississippi, before returning to Louisiana to discover the West of the river, with Alexandria and Natchitoches, located in the Cane River area. Night in one of the beautiful b&b of Natchitoches.




Day 5 : Natchitoches and Cheneyville



There also, you will find beautiful mansions always with different stories. We recommend you to sleep in Jobboom Hall plantation, near Cheneyville to complete this beautiful itinerary.

Walking along the river and visiting the plantations is quiet easy on car.> That said, a cruise on the Mississippi from New Orleans to the Natchez River (Mississippi) is recommendable. Through the water, the history of this region and its river will be unveiled with its width. Night in New Orleans.

It will be a pity not to go to the Old Square before you leave. Choose for example a guided tour during which your will be explained the history and architecture of this exceptional neighbourhood.
