From colonial villages to thick jungles, not to mention the superb beaches and volcanoes, there is something for everyone in El Salvador. Whether you are an adventurer seeking thrills or looking for relaxation and rest, this country is made for you.
A must-see is the Joya de Cerén, also called the Mayan Pompeii. This Mayan site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a true historical gem, remarkably preserved after being destroyed by an eruption in 535 BC. Another site that will catch your attention: the San Andrés valley. The latter is home to a pyramid made of volcanic stones that will surely pique your curiosity. The more athletic will also find happiness with one of the 21 volcanoes scattered throughout the country. By going for a hike on the Santa Ana volcano, for example, you can admire the hidden lake at the heart of the volcano and wait for nightfall to enjoy an incredible sunset.
If the wonder at El Salvador's landscapes will make you appreciate the country, meeting its local people will make you fall in love with it.
Far from protocols and always with a smile towards others, going to meet Salvadorans is a sure way to come out enriched and fulfilled from your adventure in this warm country. During a walk in town, leaving a restaurant, or simply at the top of a mountain, the locals will always be ready to lend you a hand. For more chances to meet people and create bonds, a tip: take the famous Ruta de las Flores, which crosses many small typical villages of El Salvador.
Meeting the locals often gives you the opportunity to taste many local products. El Salvador is full of delicious tropical fruits and seafood, especially lobsters, which are highly renowned there.
Among the specialties you can enjoy here, there is casamiento, a simple mix of rice and beans. Pupusas, corn cakes often filled with cheese, beans, or meat, are also part of the culinary heritage. Likewise, you must try elotes (hot corn on the cob sprinkled with mayonnaise and spices), or the famous ceviche. As for drinks, the specialty is chicha, an alcohol made from fermented corn and brown sugar.
