While most of us are waiting for the measures to be eased with the arrival of the vaccine, Italy has decided not to waste time by reopening tourist and cultural sites.
This decision, considered hasty by most countries, has indeed been implemented. Italy justifies it by the fact that almost all its regions are classified as moderate risk. As of today, Italy is freeing itself on several levels. First of all, on the tourist and cultural level, iconic sites and museums are reopening their doors during the week to avoid large crowds (Colosseum, Pantheon, galleries, etc.). The return of the Dolce Vita is supported by the reopening of bars and restaurants until 6 p.m. (while keeping distancing rules and limiting the number of customers).
Indeed, although the country was hit hard by the pandemic, Italy now wants to get its economic life back on track. Going out for a coffee is appreciated by the local population, but even more so by all the tourists who go there and who do not have the chance to live with such light restrictions.
To allow this return to a more "normal" life, the Italian government had to go against medical advice, which predicts that this sweet life could well be the cause of a new catastrophic wave.
The curfew is therefore still in effect, allowing for continued rigor regarding the pandemic.
Indeed, Italy is easing certain measures, given the improvement in its health situation. A reopening of restaurants, bars, and tourist and historical monuments such as the Colosseum, the Vatican museums, the Pantheon, etc. However, these measures have tended to cause controversy within the European Union. In fact, most other EU countries have had to impose even stricter restrictions to limit the spread of Covid-19.
The WHO has stated that it is too early for Italy to ease restrictions and claims that the circulation of the virus is still very high.
It is still essential to continue to respect barrier gestures, measures, and restrictions put in place in order to hope for a return to normal as quickly as possible, and to allow other countries like Italy to reopen cultural centers, restaurants, bars... For now, it is still difficult to imagine travel plans. However, Italy is, as we have just seen, an interesting destination for lovers of cultural and historical discoveries.
