While most of us are waiting for the measures to ease with the arrival of the vaccine, Italy is deciding not to waste time by reopening tourist and cultural sites.
This decision, considered hasty by most countries, has indeed been implemented. Italy justifies this by stating that almost all its regions are classified as moderate risk. From today, Italy is opening up on several levels. First, on the tourism and cultural level, iconic sites and museums are reopening their doors during the week to avoid large crowds (Colosseum, Pantheon, Galleries, etc.). The return of La Dolce Vita is supported by the reopening of bars and restaurants until 6 p.m. (while maintaining social distancing rules and limiting clientele).
Indeed, although the country was severely affected by the pandemic, Italy now wishes to revive its economic life. Going out for a coffee is appreciated by the local population but even more so by all the tourists who visit and do not have the chance to live with such light restrictions.
To enable this return to a more "normal" life, the Italian government had to oppose medical advice predicting that this gentle life could well lead to a new catastrophic wave.
The curfew is therefore still in place, allowing for strict pandemic management.
Indeed, Italy is relaxing some measures in light of its improved health situation. A reopening of restaurants, bars, and tourist and historical monuments such as the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Pantheon etc. However, these measures have tended to cause controversy within the European Union, as most other EU countries have had to impose even stricter restrictions to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The WHO has assured that it was too early for Italy to relax restrictions and affirms that virus circulation is still very high.
It is still crucial to continue respecting barrier gestures, measures, and restrictions in place to hope for a return to normal as quickly as possible and allow other countries like Italy to reopen cultural centers, restaurants, bars... For now, it is still difficult to imagine travel projects; however, Italy is, as we have just seen, an interesting destination for cultural and historical discovery enthusiasts.
