Ten sports to discover Cape Verde
Located off the coast of Senegal, Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, where you can admire lush landscapes and sandy beaches.
We also recommend discovering this country from a new perspective through a wide range of sports activities. The Morabitur agency, specialized in tourist excursions, has made us a list of ten sports that can be easily practiced in Cape Verde.
Hiking in Santo Antao
Santo Antao is the perfect island for excursions. Thanks to its dry lands and mountains, the landscape offered by the island is unique and can be discovered along its trails. The trek from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande allows you to understand and discover the richness of the island. Throughout the excursion, you can admire lunar landscapes, but also green ones, like the Vale do Paul, one of the most magical places on the island.
Of course, to recover your energy after your hike, we recommend trying a Grogue, the island's typical brandy.
Kitesurfing in Sal
The wind is very present during much of the year. Sal is world-renowned for its kitesurfing spots. Walking with your kite, you will sail in turquoise blue waters. Whether you are a beginner or have an advanced level, there are many schools present both for discovering this sport and for those who already have a good level. Sal is even famous for the great kitesurfing champions who come to train, especially on the beaches of Kite Beach, Sanda Bay, or Santa Maria. It's time to take flight.
Diving in Sal and Santo Antao
The biodiversity of Cape Verde's seabed is known for its great variety. It is one of the most famous diving sites in the world. Santo Antao is full of very beautiful spots; among them, the coral wall "Hanging garden" and the sublime white sand reef called "Wish you were here". However, the island of Sal is the most famous for diving, with its incredible sites such as the Chouclass plateau or the Burcona cave and its blue light.
Surfing in Sal and Santiago
Cape Verde, located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is perfect for a surf trip. There are two islands especially recommended for mastering the waves: Sal and Santiago. In Santiago, you must discover the secret spot of all Cape Verdean surfers, Tarrafal beach. After seeing them tame the waves, you will surely want to try! In Sal, the spot of Ponta Preta is the most recognized for its waves.
Paddleboarding in Sal
If you want to try paddleboarding, there is no better place than the incredible setting of the island of Sal. When you manage to stand up on your paddleboard, you can admire the sumptuous landscape in front of you. Santa Maria beach is one of the most pleasant for this activity. The different schools present there will allow you to quickly discover this sport.
Kayaking in Santo Antao
Santo Antao is a very mountainous area highly recommended for hiking. However, Tarrafa beach, one of the longest on the island, is one of the most pleasant for water sports. The kayak excursion will allow you to enjoy a sublime environment surrounded by mountains. It will be possible to admire the coast from the sea.
Climbing Mount Fogo
In Cape Verde, climbing this mountain is one of the must-do activities. Most people who go to the island of Fogo discover incredible landscapes through a trek with a guide on the volcano, the highest point of the entire archipelago with its 2,829 meters of altitude. Volcanic activity remains quite intense, but this does not prevent the development of agriculture. You can find apples, peanuts, or pomegranates growing directly in the lava.
Jet skiing in Sal
In Cape Verde, jet skiing is a very popular activity, especially in Sal. You don't need to be a professional pilot; adults and children can try piloting. There are different routes depending on your level and a guide can accompany you if necessary. Touring the island at the helm of a jet ski will offer unique sensations and, of course, a magnificent view of the coast. You learn to handle it quickly, but be careful with the speed!
Sport fishing in Sao Vicente
The waters of Cape Verde are famous for their marine biodiversity. In these waters, blue marlin fishing is practiced, a large fish that can reach 450 kg. During a boat trip, you can learn more about the different types of fishing, such as small trolling, bottom fishing, or jigging, thanks to the explanations of the crew. If you want to walk, you can stop by fishing centers that offer excursions to nearby islands.
A quad ride in Sal
Santa Maria, a rather desert area, is the ideal place for a little quad ride. This is probably the best way to venture off the beaten path and face the sand dunes or the rocky roads of the island that will take you to the salt flats. In addition, the quad will make it easier for you to access the many sublime and little-known beaches where you can relax after some sufficiently sporty moments with your quads. Without a doubt, this is the best way to get off the beaten track in Cape Verde.
