La Paz - Rurrenabaque - Chalalan

Transfer to El Alto airport for a morning flight to Rurrenabaque. The flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque will take about 45 minutes, flying over the amazing Real Cordillera. On a clear day, we can see the Bolivian Altiplano, Andean snow-peaks, and the lush green Amazon with its meandering rivers. The guide will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to the Chalalán office in Rurrenabaque for a short briefing. For the next adventure, we will be taken to the port to board a motorboat that will take us to Chalalán Lodge. The trip will take 6 hours, sailing the Beni and Tuichi rivers. First, we will pass through the Cañon del Bala (Bala Gorge) in the Beni River. Afterward, the boat will turn into the Tuichi River to enter Madidi National Park, the most biodiverse park in the world. During this amazing boat ride, we will have a chance to appreciate and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Amazon and observe wildlife on the riverbanks, such as capybaras, tapirs, macaws, toucans, caimans, and, with luck, a jaguar. Once we arrive at the Chalalán port, we will start a 25-minute walk to the lake where the cabins are located. There will be a reception and welcome at Chalalán Lodge, then the guide will show us to our rooms. Shortly after lunch, we will have a short walk through one of our trails, where our guide will interpret the rainforest and share information about the traditional use of natural resources. The return to the lodge will be by canoe, giving us a chance to observe some species of monkeys and birds. At night, after dinner, there is an optional guided tour to observe some nocturnal wildlife, such as insects, nocturnal birds, and, along the lake shore, some caimans' glowing eyes. (L, D)

Chalalán Ecolodge - Parque Nacional Madidi

We wake up to a rainforest symphony of wildlife sounds. After breakfast, we have a guided walk—3 to 4 hours—on the Tapare trail or a similar route. This is a chance to observe wildlife such as squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and many other species of birds, including toucans, macaws, parrots, eagles, and guans. Our guide will provide us with more information about the rainforest, and by noon we will head back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, after some rest, we will hike another trail to continue looking for more wildlife and to learn more about plants and animal behaviors. (B, L, D)

    Chalalan - Rurrenabaque - Pampas

Today, enjoy an early breakfast before walking to the Tuichi River port to board our return boat to Rurrenabaque. There, we will change our transport to a car and drive you to our lodge, located by the Yacuma River in the middle of the Pampas, or Bolivian Savannahs. After lunch, we will explore the river in a dugout canoe to experience sightings of pink dolphins, monkeys, capybaras, turtles, and a variety of birdlife, including raptors, storks, herons, egrets, toucans, small parrots, and a few macaws. Afterward, we will return to the lodge to relax and have dinner. (B, L, D)

    Pampas

This day, we are going to explore more of the Yacuma River by canoe. We’ll make a stop at the shore and search on foot in the savannah to locate and possibly observe an anaconda, the world’s largest snake. Thereafter, we return to the lodge for lunch, and on our way, we'll have another opportunity to see pink dolphins, turtles, and capybaras. The afternoon tour provides opportunities to find rheas, anteaters, and monkeys. At night, there is an optional night canoe ride, allowing us to watch nocturnal life, such as encountering black caimans or alligators (B, L, D).
