day 6
Observation of monkeysThe Jozani forest is known for being home to Kirk's red colobus monkeys, a species of monkey endemic to Zanzibar. About 10 years ago, these monkeys were considered an endangered species, but this is no longer the case today thanks to the conservation project that was implemented. There are about 6000 colobus monkeys living in the Jozani forest. Meet monkeys, walk through the mangroves, observe eucalyptus and mahogany trees, see bushpigs (a type of warthog), small antelopes, elephant shrews, chameleons, birds... You can also visit the butterfly sanctuary (visit possible, entrance fee to be paid on site). Local communities are involved in the Jozani wildlife conservation project, especially for the Piliocolobus monkey. Part of the entrance fee will go to them to fund development projects and compensate for the loss of crops of some farmers, damaged or stolen by the monkeys. You will then be taken to the village of Jambiani, where you can enjoy your afternoon on its fine sandy beaches.
