A small detour will allow you to visit the famous Hill of Crosses, an extremely impressive place of pilgrimage, made up of 150,000 crosses of all sizes and all kinds. Once in Latvia, visit Rundāle, known for its extravagant palace in the middle of bucolic nature, created by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, master architect of the imperial court of Russia and author of the Winter Palace (the Hermitage). Jewels of Courland and the Baltic Riviera before arriving in Rīga
Breakfast at your hotel. Today, head back to the Baltic metropolis. But first, a small detour to discover a few jewels of Latvia. Start with Jelgava, founded in 1265, former capital of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, which suffered greatly after the outbreak of the First and Second World Wars. Destroyed 90% during the Second World War, it nevertheless remains an important stop from a historical point of view. A good example is Jelgava Palace and its park, the former palace of the Dukes of Courland. Like their summer palace located in Rundale, it was designed by the architect Rastrelli. Then go visit Jelgava city center, the bell tower of the Trinity Church, the Jelgava Museum of History and Art, as well as the Old Town district of Jelgava. Stop at Ķemeri National Park. You can walk along the trail laid out in the heart of the peat bogs: wooden boardwalks wind above a unique landscape of marshes, acidic lakes and miniature pines. The walk offers total immersion in one of Latvia’s most emblematic ecosystems. Last stop before reaching the capital: Jūrmala, the famous seaside resort with 150 years of holiday traditions. Explore the history of this town and its romantic 19th-century wooden villas, its pine forests, its large white beaches. In the early afternoon, reach Rīga. Capital of Latvia and metropolis of the Baltic States, Riga has nearly 700,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1201, it preserves the medieval Old Town listed as a World Heritage Site, the loop of gardens and elegant grand boulevards, the picturesque canal and the famous Art Nouveau district, where your hotel is located.
