Siecha Lakes Hiking Day

Colombia, discover this 1-day trip

Trip Description

Hiking through a páramo to the spectacular mountain lakes that were the true El Dorado. Private transport from Bogota included. Trip activities and highlights: Take a beautiful hike just an hour and a half from Bogotá. Discover the Muisca people who inspired the legend of El Dorado. See the rich flora and fauna of a páramo. The Lagunas de Siecha are a group of three lakes in the mountains of Chingaza National Park, east of Bogota. The lakes, called Siecha, Guasca, and De Los Patos, are aligned on three different levels, like steps of a giant staircase. Their calm emerald waters, coming from a glacier that once covered the region, contrast with the jagged mountains that surround them and create one of the most breathtaking views in the Colombian Andes. The Siecha lakes were sacred to the ancient Muisca, who held rituals there that involved throwing gold into the water. This Muisca practice gave rise to the legend of El Dorado, and the Spanish made great efforts to obtain the golden artifacts in the lakes. Today, the treasures of the Siecha lakes are not found beneath its waters, but in the surroundings. There you can find spectacular bears, deer, Andean eagles, parakeets, and many other animals. The environment is called páramo, an extremely diverse ecosystem found only in Colombia and two other countries. This trip takes you on a 10-kilometer hike through beautiful landscapes to appreciate the rich nature of the Colombian highlands and discover the country's fascinating indigenous culture and history.
