Neelambari Kainakary in the BackwatersFor the BACKWATERS… The network, made up of about 1500 kilometers of canals, both natural and artificial, includes several large lakes such as Ashtamudi and Vembanad. Stretching along almost the entire length of the Kerala coast, it is fed by around forty coastal rivers descending from the Western Ghats. The lagoons were formed by the action of waves and coastal currents, creating a barrier of low islands at the mouths of the coastal rivers. Connected by man-made canals, the lagoons form a transport network for goods that is widely used by the local economy. The Backwaters are also a major tourist attraction in Kerala. To discover the backwaters… we have chosen to take you away from the major tourist centers to discover the Backwaters from the inside by staying on a peninsula… For the backwaters... forget the House-Boat... As for the house-boat, while the accommodation itself is unusual, it is its over-exploitation that makes it less attractive! House-boats side by side... in a long line... and sorry, it is very difficult to get around this due to government restrictions that we must respect. Here is the much less idyllic side of the House-Boat, and this is what we want to avoid. I am not sure that the traveler seeking "authenticity" will appreciate us endorsing this mass tourism! As an alternative, we offer accommodation in the heart of the backwaters, on a peninsula, for an immersion in the heart of the population and encounters with the villages...
day 14
KainakaryBreakfast at the hotel… 07:30 We offer you a complete immersion in daily life on the backwaters. Discover this region during a cruise on a small canoe. Possibility to visit a coconut plantation, the local market, the school (subject to authorization). Cooking demonstration and lunch with a local family.
day 15
Kainakary Kochin Cochin AirportBreakfast, then drive to Cochin and check-in at the hotel. Visit of Fort Kochi… - Kochi — formerly Cochin — is the most populated city in the state of Kerala in India and its main port, located 200 km north of its capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The historic heart of the city is in the Fort Cochin district, on the Mattancheri peninsula. This is where you will find the raja's palace, called the Dutch Palace. Although built around 1555 by the Portuguese for Raja Virakeralavarma, the Dutch renovated it a century later to make it the governor's palace. It was returned to the raja, who had it decorated with superb mural paintings, beautifully preserved, depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The Chinese fishing nets are a classic tourist attraction, probably a remnant of the Chinese expedition of the eunuch Zheng He, who passed through here before the arrival of the Europeans. In Fort Cochin, you will also find the old synagogue dating from 1568 and enlarged in 1760, as well as the Santa Cruz Cathedral and St. Francis Church.
