The waterfalls of Laguna: Hulugan and Pagsanjan

Philippines, discover this 1-day trip

Trip Description

Walk through tropical forests, rappel down a gorge, and canoe through rapids to see some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Philippines. Private transport from Manila included. Highlights and activities: Visit 4 waterfalls, including Pagsanjan and Hulugan Falls. Hike through lush tropical forests. Descend a gorge by walking, climbing, and rappelling along a forest trail. Tour in a traditional canoe through the river rapids. Swim in waterfall lagoons. Laguna de Bay, just south of Manila, is the largest lake in the Philippines and is surrounded by some of the greenest mountains in the country. These wooded mountains are crossed by countless streams and rivers that flow into the lake, blessing the Laguna region with many waterfalls. Of all the beautiful waterfalls in Laguna, Hulugan Falls and Pagsanjan Falls (also called Cavinti Falls and Magdapio Falls) are the most impressive. Not only are the waterfalls spectacular, but their surroundings and the experience they offer are unforgettable. Hulugan Falls are located in a tropical forest and, to get there, we hike along narrow trails, cross streams, and climb over rocks. Before reaching Hulugan Falls, we arrive at two other waterfalls, Talay Falls and Hidden Falls, both remarkable in their own right. Hulugan Falls themselves are breathtaking with their 70-meter (230-foot) high curtain of water that creates a fine veil over a richly vegetated rock wall. Pagsanjan Falls are located at the bottom of a gorge and are surrounded by a dense forest of exotic plants. Scenes from the film Apocalypse Now were shot in the gorges of the Pagsanjan River and it is one of the must-see destinations in the Philippines. To reach the falls, we cross the rainforest and descend the gorges using a system of walkways, stairs, and elevated ladders. It is an exciting and scenic descent that involves the use of harnesses and ropes to cross several sections. Pagsanjan Falls pour violently into a lagoon and you jump onto a bamboo raft to get closer to the falling water. The experience ends with a canoe descent along a river lined with steep cliffs and dotted with rapids.

Stay program

  • day 1

The most beautiful day of the waterfalls.

We pick you up at your hotel at 6 in the morning and drive 3 hours to Luisiana, home of Hulugan Falls. From the trailhead, it's a 30-minute hike to Talay Falls, the first of the three waterfalls in the area. This is the smallest of the falls we visit and the water is the calmest, making it an ideal spot for swimming. Just above Talay is Hidden Falls, and we hike 10 minutes up a steep path and rocks to find it. From Hidden Falls, it's a 30-minute hike through streams and steep trails to Hulugan Falls. When our eyes and hearts are satisfied, we hike back up to the trailhead and close the loop in about 30 minutes. We will then have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we drive 30 minutes to the starting point for Pagsanjan Falls in Cavinti. We walk about ten minutes on a trail, then arrive at a metal suspension bridge above the forest floor. Here, we put on harnesses and use a rope to descend a vertical section. We go down the gorge via the metal bridge and descend twice more with a rope. Getting to the falls at the bottom of the gorge takes about an hour. Pagsanjan Falls is about 30 meters (100 feet) from the shore and we get on a bamboo raft to approach it. We go behind the falling water into a hollow in the rock wall, where we can appreciate the power of the waterfall up close and safely swim at the same time. After experiencing the falls, we get on a canoe and float downstream through the scenic gorges. This is a one-of-a-kind trip, with our skilled boatmen navigating shallow sections and rapids by jumping out of the canoe and pushing rocks with their feet. Our vehicle awaits us at the end of the canoe ride and we return to Manila around 7 p.m.
