Sri-Mahabodhi (Sacred Bo-tree), brought as the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is over 2,200 years old and is the oldest historically documented tree in the world. The Brazen Palace (2nd century BC): the 1,600 stone columns you see are all that remains of a magnificent multi-storied residence for monks. RuwanweliSeya (2nd century BC): this is the most famous of all the Dagobas. Originally, it represented the perfect "water bubble" shape, which modern restoration has not been able to accurately reproduce. The Samadhi Buddha (3rd century BC), one of the most famous statues, represents the Buddha in a state of "Samadhi" or deep meditation. Isurumuniya rock temple (3rd century BC), well known for its rock carving of the "lovers." Kuttam Pokuna - twin ponds (3rd century BC), used by monks of old as a bathing pool. The base of the rock is surrounded by a moat, a rampart, and vast gardens, including the famous water gardens. The Madu River, which flows through Balapitiya (about 80 km south of Colombo), is one of the rarely visited and preserved attractions that any nature lover can find in Sri Lanka. It boasts a cluster of 64 small islands scattered along its path, most of which are uninhabited and covered with mangroves. The smallest islet of the lot is called "Satha Paha Doowa", where there is a tiny sanctuary with a statue built in homage to the gods of Kataragama. According to folklore, this islet was bought for five cents, but some say the name derived from its shape resembling the five-cent coin. Madu is certainly a peaceful and memorable place of interest for any nature lover who wishes to witness enchanting landscapes.
