Colombo International Airport and Negombo (20 min)

Aéroport Int. de Colombo et Negombo (20min)

You are greeted by your driver upon your arrival in Colombo. You have now arrived in tropical land, with Negombo as your first stop. Close to the airport, Negombo is ideal for resting after a long flight. You can still see many colonial monuments and churches there today, such as St. Mary's Church, built from 1874 to 1922. In fact, with a large Catholic community, the city is nicknamed "Little Rome." Depending on your arrival time, we suggest a walk along the Dutch canal, which is misnamed since it existed two centuries before the Dutch colonization. It is a beautiful introduction... an encounter with nature... to enjoy the magnificent sunset. Overnight in Negombo

  • day 2

Negombo to Yapahuwa and Anuradhapura (4 h)

    Negombo a Yapahuwa et Anuradhapura (4 h)

In the morning, we recommend that you discover the city of Negombo early, as well as the fish market, located north of the Fort on the seafront. This market is considered one of the largest in Sri Lanka. Very popular and authentic, it takes place every morning on the sandy lagoon of Negombo. At dawn, boats land on the beach with their catch. Do not miss the return of the shrimp fishermen pulling their nets on the beach before taking their catch to the fish market. The activity is in full swing between 6 am and 10 am: sorting fish, cutting and salting, auctions and negotiations... A show as amazing as it is instructive. Take the road towards the cultural triangle, you will cross all kinds of landscapes made up of coconut trees, rice fields, jungle... On the way, visit the ancient kingdom of Yapahuwa. A little off the beaten track, Yapahuwa is the granite fortress that once housed the tooth of Buddha, now kept in Kandy. After climbing the many steps of the fortress, you will be rewarded with a superb 360° view of the surroundings! Before sunset, you can also visit Mihintale, located about fifteen kilometers from Anuradhapura and considered a gateway to Buddhism. In this village perched on a hill, you will climb 1800 steps to reach it. It is here that Mahinda, the disciple of Buddha, came to settle to spread the word of his master. Once at the top, the landscape is worth the effort. You continue towards the city of Anuradhapura. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

You can explore by bike, on foot, or by tuk-tuk in search of the most impressive stupas, the most sacred temples, and the most admired ruins. A true journey through time that allows you to get a glimpse of the past splendor of this city. Then, you head towards Sigiriya. On the way, you could make a small detour to see the Aukana Buddha statue, located to the west of the great Kalawewa lake, which, at 12 meters high, is one of the tallest in the country, but also one of the oldest and best preserved. It is the result of a contest between a master sculptor and his apprentice. You could also discover the Ritigala nature reserve, which houses an ancient Buddhist monastery. Early in the morning, to avoid the crowds, visit the fortress of the mad king Kashyapa (5th century), perched 200 meters high on a block of red granite: the Lion Rock of Sigiriya. We advise you to start early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The site's hydraulic system is highly sophisticated and the Maidens (royal concubines or apsaras, celestial nymphs) painted on the stone walls are exceptional, both for their beauty and because they are the only known female images from this period in Sri Lanka. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the most visited site in Sri Lanka. Later, we suggest you discover the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This monastery, comprising five sanctuaries, is a major pilgrimage site. It is also one of the largest and best-preserved cave temple complexes in Sri Lanka. It houses more than 150 statues and paintings from the Kandy school. Also enjoy the beautiful panorama of the surroundings. Then, towards Matale, you will visit a garden of spices and medicinal plants. You will start by touring the garden, simple but very well maintained. You will see in particular: cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, clove, turmeric, and even the chocolate tree. Kandy, the last royal capital of the island, retains an aristocratic atmosphere. Set out to discover the city center on foot, starting with a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred Buddhist temple. The site is richly decorated and houses the relic of the Buddha's tooth.
