day 2
EXCURSION LANDSCAPE AND SUMMIT WINESThe impressive landscape at the summit of Gran Canaria, with a panoramic view of the Tejeda caldera, Roque Bentayga, Roque Nublo, and Tenerife with Mount Teide in the background, will offer us the perfect excuse to walk part of one of the most spectacular and least frequented trails of Gran Canaria, the one that connects Cruz de Tejeda to the Cuevas Caídos district. There you will find Bodegas Bentayga (Vinos Agala), one of the most awarded vineyards in the islands in recent years, which produces wine at the highest altitude in Europe. The route runs along the edge of the Tejeda caldera, towards Roque Nublo, so the majesty of the landscape will leave no one indifferent. The spectacular views of the Tejeda basin from the winery itself will also not leave you indifferent. There, we will be able to admire the spectacular caves carved into the rock where their wines age, while discovering the fascinating world of tasting and winemaking, guided by the owner or the winemaker who, in recent years, have raised this winery to the highest standards of quality.
day 3
Free dayToday, you can enjoy the natural environment or go down to the beach.
day 4
AGAETE EXCURSION: FROM THE BEACH TO THE COFFEE VALLEYIn the northwest of Gran Canaria lies one of the island's most unique towns, Agaete, which has managed to combine history, tradition, and modernity like few others. Agaete has always been a region rich in natural resources. The fertile lands of the "Valley" and its abundant water sources, as well as a prosperous fishing area on its coast, have made this part of the island inhabited from the first settlers to the present day. Upon entering the municipality, we arrive at the town of San Pedro, where we can admire one of the most beautiful landscapes of Gran Canaria. The spectacular Tamadaba massif shelters this bucolic valley where, thanks to its particular microclimate, many tropical fruit plantations thrive. It is precisely this microclimate that allows Agaete to be the only place in Europe where coffee plantations can be found. It is said that the aborigines, during periods of drought, already celebrated a rite consisting of climbing into the Tamadaba pine forest to collect branches, then descending to the coast to shake them in the sea while praying for the long-awaited rain... Myth or reality, there is no doubt that the Fiesta de La Rama is an important part of the Canarian identity. It is for all these reasons, as well as its botanical and ethnographic richness, that we suggest this magnificent interpreted hiking route from Playa de Agaete to San Pedro. Once in the Agaete valley, on the slopes of the Tamadaba massif, we will visit the Finca La Laja, where we will enjoy a true gift for the senses: among hundreds of fruit trees, we will be able to see the vineyards and coffee plantations from which their magnificent wines and their aromatic coffee, unique in the world, come. There, they will delight us with a guided tasting of both products, in addition to tasting the valley's medicinal water, seasonal fruits from the farm, snacks with typical island products, and a guided tour of the entire plantation. To end our journey, we cannot leave Agaete without visiting what the locals call "La Playa" or the famous Puerto de Las Nieves. Well known today for being an important pier connecting the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, Agaete has always been a fishing village, where many families still live from artisanal fishing. Once on the coast, we will take a walking tour, discovering Agaete beach, the old pier, the area where the traditional fishing boats are located, until we reach the Las Salinas area. As its name suggests, it was once one of the most important salt marshes in the north of Gran Canaria, today transformed into beautiful natural pools, where you can enjoy a pleasant swim while feeling the strength of the sea in this northwestern area of Gran Canaria.
day 5
FREE VISIT OF THE ISLAND OF GRAN CANARIAday 6
BERGERS HIKING TRAIL: CLOSEST TO LOCAL POPULATIONSThis "journey" will take us to the heart of the livestock region in the north of Gran Canaria, one of the most rural and least known areas of the island, where even a small number of shepherd families continue the ancient way of life of the island mountains, as well as the artisanal production of a cheese unique in the world: Flor de Guía cheese (DO). The Altos de Gáldar, in turn, contain a bucolic landscape made up of gentle hills of green meadows that will sometimes make us wonder if we are in the Canary Islands or in the lands of Ireland or Switzerland... We will walk along an old shepherd's trail where you can have the privilege of enjoying one of the activities that characterizes grazing on the islands and that fewer and fewer families maintain: transhumance. During our journey, we may meet them, along with their faithful sheepdogs, moving the sheep herds daily between different grazing areas. It will be the perfect time to start a conversation with them and learn firsthand a bit more about the way of life of the locals and how it has changed in recent years, if at all... Continuing on our way, we will pass by a beautiful volcanic caldera and through a peaceful Canary pine forest, then skirt a natural plain where every morning the cattle graze and are tended by hand until we reach our final destination, the house and cheese dairy where the famous local sheep cheeses are made. We will be welcomed there by Tania and Francisco, who, despite their youth, are strongly committed to maintaining this ancient way of life and to making one of the best sheep cheeses on the island, innovating within tradition. Witnesses to the hospitality that characterizes the local population, we will spend a pleasant time visiting the surroundings of the farm, learning how the cheese is made and how the goats are milked, as well as visiting the natural cave where the cheeses slowly mature... Our "journey" will end, of course, with a tasting of the different types of cheeses made there, accompanied by artisanal bread from Juncalillo, seasoned tomatoes, dried fruits, and wine from Gran Canaria. We will also have the opportunity, with Tania, to learn how to make our own cheese in the traditional way, on old wooden cheese molds...
