From Madras to Bombay, Hindu sweets and backwaters

India, discover this 12-day trip

Trip Description

Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal to the east, Kerala and the Arabian Sea to the west. First come, on the "heads" side, the wonders of Dravidian religious architecture (from drâvida, referring to the indigenous inhabitants of southern India) in Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram, along with the French past of Pondicherry and the universal utopia of Auroville. Then, on the "tails" side, the colonial atmosphere of Fort Cochin and the peaceful nature of the Backwaters, followed by the beach of Mararikulam. A beautiful progression through everything the southern coast has to offer. Everywhere, a welcoming and open population, and vibrant traditions. Kitchens where seafood meets a thousand Indian spices, where Eastern and Western influences play, and where you eat with your fingertips. South India is being blended into the contemporary world, like every corner of the globe, but it does so with discernment and, in doing so, preserves the essence of its cultural and spiritual heritage.

This intentional community, city of the future and of peace, was founded in 1968 by the Mother (the Frenchwoman Mirra Alfassa, 1878-1973), disciple of the Hindu philosopher Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950). Around the peace area where the Matrimandir meditation sphere stands, there is a green industrial zone, a residential zone, an international zone, and a cultural zone. The architect Roger Anger (1923-2008) worked extensively on this project supported by UNESCO and developed concepts there that blend modernism and organicism. In the late afternoon, visit to the Ganesh temple (Manakula Vinayagar Koil) in Pondicherry, where you receive the blessing of the sacred elephant (in fact, a female elephant named Lakshmi, who kindly places her trunk on your head). (Breakfast + Room + Lunch + Dinner)

  • day 4

    Pondicherry

On the program - The old town of Pondicherry. French Pondicherry. Or rather Franco-Indian, as the connection between European and Tamil architecture is so close, giving a unique Creole style. The streets of Français/Dumas, Romain Rolland, Suffren, exude the tranquil charm of a tropical prefecture. The climate is mild, the air is briny, the Promenade beach is welcoming. The oriental and airy neo-Gothic style of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus surprises with the red and white of its walls. The war memorial of the Great War and the statue of Joan of Arc, in front of the Church of Our Lady of Angels, indicate a former desire for integration. You will also visit the Tamil town and its market, as well as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded by the wise promoter of integral yoga and led until 1973 by the Mother.
