Yalda Circuit

Iran, discover this 12-day trip

Trip Description

Yalda offers a time to feel: "The ceremony, family union, traditional food, poem 'Hafez'" The night of Yaldâ is one of the oldest traditional festivals in Iran. It marks both the longest night of the Iranian calendar, the 30th of the month of Azar, and the beginning of winter. It is an ancestral tradition that symbolizes the anticipation of the birth of the sun. That is why the great Iranian scholar Abou Rayhan Birouni (10th-11th centuries) nicknamed it "Milâd-e Akbar", which literally means "the great birth". In Iran, it is customary to gather with family to celebrate the night of Yaldâ. Various snacks are on the menu: pomegranates, watermelons, tangerines, dried fruits... Iranians love to recite poems by Hâfez (14th century). This great mystical poet had the pen name "Lessân-ol-Gheyb", which means "the language of the unknown". So, while waiting for good fortune, Iranians open the Divan of Hâfez on this beautiful night of Yalda. Reading the "Shahnameh" (The Book of Kings) by Ferdowsi (10th-11th centuries) is also common. And if grandparents happen to tell a few little tales or anecdotes, the family will have an even more memorable and magical Yaldâ night.
