Priority visit: the Sweet Auburn neighbourhood, entirely dedicated to Martin Luther King, who was born and buried there.
The largest city in Alabama, where major incidents occurred in May 1961, when the city was crossed by Freedom Wrinkles, and was struck by numerous acts of violence, including the very bloody attack at the church of 16th Street in September 1963. Priority visit: the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. It takes 2 hours from Atlanta.

On the road to Jackson, stop at Oxford University where James Meredith had to fight in 1962, a young black student, who was denied the right to register. Jackson, the State's capital, was an important centre for claiming civil rights. It takes 3 hours from Memphis.

From Jackson, stop on the way in Selma, 40 miles west of Montgomery, where the Selma-Montgomery, where the peaceful march of May 1956 was suppressed in a cruel way by the authorities of the time (Bloody Sunday).
It was in this city, the capital of the state, that the bus boycott was launched, following the arrest of Rosa Park on 5 December 1955. A few years later in May 1961, the city was crossed by Freedom Rides and experienced serious incidents. Martin Luther King was the pastor and worked many times to fight for civil rights. Priority visits: Rosa Parks Library & Museum, Freddom Rides Museum, Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, Civil Right Memorial & Center, First Baptist Church, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Dexter parsonage Museum. It takes 4 hours from Jackson.
