Ten days. Nine nights. One country… but seen from where few travelers really venture. This tour takes you to the heart of the authentic southern Morocco: from the valleys of the Atlas to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, from UNESCO-listed earthen kasbahs to the alleys of Essaouira, battered by the winds of the Atlantic. In between, roads that narrow, oases that emerge from nowhere, nights in a bivouac under a sky of absolute stars, and encounters that appear in no guidebook. This is not a trip to tick boxes. It is an itinerary designed for those who want to understand what Morocco really has to say… and leave with something they didn’t expect. Curious to know what awaits you, day by day? The full description is just below.

Beschrijving van de reis

Everything begins in Marrakech, the ideal starting point. From the very first morning, the imperial city fades in the rearview mirror to make way for the landscapes: the foothills of the Atlas first of all, those peaks that defend the country like a natural wall, then the descent toward the valleys of the Drâa and the Dadès, those impossible ribbons of green lost in the middle of an ochre, stony immensity. The kasbahs appear along the road like chapters in an old novel. In Aït-Benhaddou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the earthen towers raise their architecture in the midday sun… You’d think you were there! As for the Todra Gorges, they impress in a completely different way: two vertiginous cliffs that narrow until they leave, up there, only a thin ribbon of blue sky. Then comes the desert. Merzouga and Erg Chebbi… It’s one of those places you’ve seen in pictures all your life — and when you’re really there, it’s even more than that. The sand is a deep reddish-brown, the ridges transform from hour to hour with the rhythm of the wind, and the night unfurls a sky of stars like nowhere else. A whole night in a bivouac. That vault above you, that crackling fire, those drums in the distance… These are memories you never tire of. The way back north takes other roads, other faces. Perched villages, some of which seem to hold on only by a miracle. Children who rush to the roadside waving their arms. Argan trees climbed by goats with disconcerting calm. The palm groves of Zagora or Skoura offer almost tropical stops before the landscape reshapes itself again. And then there is Essaouira: the finishing touch, the perfect counterpoint. After days of dry heat and golden dust, the city arrives with its cool wind, its screeching seagulls, its alleys tinged with salt and indigo. This 18th-century port city has something unique: a slightly nostalgic sweetness of life, an end-of-the-world light, artisans who have been working in the same workshops forever. You stroll. You settle on a terrace facing the old ramparts and listen to the sea. It’s such a different way of being in Morocco… and yet, it’s so much it. Ten days. Nine nights. One certainty: you come back different.

We leave Marrakech and cross the Tichka pass, perched at more than 2

  • dag 3

Aït-Benhaddou and road to Skoura: the kasbah and the palm trees

The morning belongs to Aït-Benhaddou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We explore its sun-gilded earthen towers, its alleys that seem to come out of another century. In the afternoon, the road heads toward Skoura and its immense palm grove, a true oasis suspended between two immensities.

  • dag 4

Dades and Todra Gorges: the vertigo of mineral

Two gorges, two characters. First the Dadès, with its rock formations sculpted by time and its kasbahs perched on the heights. Then the Todra: two dizzying walls that narrow to just a few meters from each other… one of the most striking scenes of the trip.

  • dag 5

Road to Merzouga: at the gates of the desert

The road stretches on, the landscape becomes bare. The last Berber villages go by, the palm trees grow scarce, the sand begins to appear between the stones. On the horizon, the first dunes of the Erg Chebbi stand out against the sky. The arrival in Merzouga, at the end of the day, is a moment apart.

  • dag 6

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the night under the stars

The day is organized around the desert. A dromedary ride in the late afternoon, climbing a ridge to watch the sun disappear over the dunes… then the night in a bivouac. Campfire, scalding tea, Berber drums and a sky full of stars like you rarely see. That evening, time stands still.

  • dag 7

From Merzouga to Ouarzazate: the great crossing

A long and beautiful day on the road that sums up, all by itself, the diversity of southern Morocco. We leave the dunes of Merzouga, we cross Tazarine and its landscapes of stone and ochre, before following the Drâa valley to Agdz. The palm groves go by, the ksours appear around the bends, and it is Ouarzazate that welcomes us at the end of the day for a well-deserved night.

  • dag 8

Ouarzazate to Essaouira: between kasbahs and the ocean

The morning begins with a visit to the kasbah of Taourirt, one of the jewels of Ouarzazate, before taking the road to the Atlantic. The journey crosses the landscapes of the Anti-Atlas, the argan-tree plains climbed by goats and the first iodized scents that herald the coast. After about five hours on the road, Essaouira finally appears, white and blue, battered by the wind… The contrast with the previous days is total, and that's exactly why it is unforgettable.

  • dag 9

Essaouira: the wind, the sea and the blue alleyways

The morning belongs to Essaouira. The ramparts, the fishing port, the artisans' galleries, the alleys tinted with salt and indigo… the city is strolled through slowly and lets itself be tamed without effort. In the evening, the road heads back to Marrakech for a final night in the ochre city.
