Batur, Agung & Rinjani: the volcanic trio

Indonesia, discover this 10-day trip

Trip Description

Destination: Bali & Lombok Duration: 10 days Price: €765 Level: Challenging Bali, the Island of the Gods, is also the island of volcanoes and of people who are so close to them, not only because they live permanently on their slopes, but also because these volcanoes are sacred to Hindus. Mount Batur (1717 m), with its three summits (the smallest of which remained active until 2001) and its immense caldera lake, as well as the Agung volcano, which at 3142 m dominates the island, were the scene of the last deadly eruption in 1963, killing more than 1000 people and devastating many crops. This event forced inhabitants to take refuge on neighboring islands to avoid famine. These volcanoes are still today the center of many religious ceremonies… Rinjani (3726 m), the 3rd highest Indonesian peak, and its active volcano Baru, located on the shores of the splendid Segara Anak lake, sometimes see the authorities close access to the caldera due to eruptions. In the early morning light, from its summit, you can see in the distance another giant, Tambora to the east and Agung to the west, and at your feet, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Indonesia.

We begin our approach hike towards Mount Rinjani by heading to our campsite along the banks of Lake Segara Anak (2200 m), located 1500 m below the summit. The large size of this lake earned it the name "Child of the Sea", in other words "Segara Anak". It is indeed 3 km long and some say it reaches 250 meters in depth. The caldera in which it is located is also gigantic, with its 8 km length and 6 km width. Discovering this lake is the reward for our strenuous hike. In the full light of day, we discover the splendid green tones of the lake, with Gunung Baru at its center, exhaling small clouds of sulfur. This new cone, which emerged from the waters of the lake in 1942, now rises more than 140 meters above its surface. A feeling of being at the end of the world… Evening with fishermen who stay the week on the shore of this fish-filled lake, then go down to the village to sell their catch. Night in a tent. 8 hours of walking Elevation gain: 1700 m / Elevation loss: 300 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Mount Rinjani: sacred mountain Mount Rinjani is the third highest peak in Indonesia after that of West Papua: the Carstensz Pyramid, also known as Puncak Jaya. The name of the volcano comes from words in Old Javanese meaning "God". In ancient times, the Sasak, a community living in Lombok and part of Bali, considered Rinjani as the home of powerful spirits and deities, including the daughter of their supreme God. The Balinese themselves crossed the sea to pay homage to this mountain during an annual ceremony. Whatever the reasons for these cults, this place truly possesses something magical.
