Designed for architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and curious travelers, this private guided journey takes you through some of the most breathtaking architectural works in India. From coastal rock-cut sanctuaries and intricately carved temple halls to the palatial bungalows of Chettinad and finely crafted stone sculptures, this is an in-depth exploration of design at its highest level. Over 13 days, you will be introduced to Mahabalipuram with its rock-cut masterpieces, study the precision of granite at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara, meet bronze casters in Swamimalai and stone sculptors near Halebidu, and stay in heritage residences.

Trip Description

This journey can be divided into two phases (you may choose either one). In the first phase, you begin at Mahabalipuram to examine the Pancha Rathas, Arjuna's Penance, and the Shore Temple—a clear introduction to ancient Dravidian vocabulary. Take a break in Pondicherry for its Franco-Tamil urban landscape before continuing to Chidambaram, where you can explore classic gopurams, columned mandapas, and long prakarams that structure the layout of the temple town. Travel inland around Kumbakonam for a group of shrines and, if time permits, a visit to a lost-wax bronze workshop in Swamimalai. Next, compare two UNESCO masterpieces: the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram (monumental scale, axial symmetry) and the Airavatesvara Temple (complex mandapa programs, secondary shrines, refined details). Then, move on to Chettinad for a change of scenery—photogenic heritage mansions, Athangudi tiles, and local temples—before heading to Madurai for the urban theater of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, its monumental gateways, and rhythmic colonnades.
