Trip Description

This 14-day itinerary is designed for travelers seeking a complete Balkan experience. Begin in northern Albania with the historic cities of Kruja and Shkodër, then venture into the mountains via Koman Lake and Valbona Valley. Cross into Kosovo to explore Gjakova and Prizren, then discover Pristina and the Rugova Canyon in the Accursed Mountains. Enter Montenegro to witness primeval forests, the Tara Canyon, and Durmitor National Park. Continue along the Adriatic, visiting Kotor, Perast, Budva, and Ulcinj, before returning to Albania to enjoy the golden dunes of Shëngjin, the biodiversity of Divjakë-Karavasta Lagoon, and the historic charm of Berat. Conclude the trip with Holta Canyon and a final exploration of Tirana.     Upon arrival, we will go directly into the heart of Albanian history: the medieval city of Kruja, a symbol of resistance and national identity. With a local guide, we will stroll through the old bazaar, famous for its silverwork and traditional crafts, and visit the Skanderbeg Museum, located within the fortress walls. A scenic mountain drive will take us to the Bektashi sanctuary of Sari Salltik, offering a peaceful atmosphere and panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. We will continue north to Shkodër, the cultural center of northern Albania.

    We wake up early to reach Koman Lake, where we board a boat and venture into the mountains through narrow gorges, steep cliffs, and emerald waters. Along the way, we stop at the Shala River, a hidden natural gem known for its crystal-clear waters and white gravel banks. There is time to swim or simply relax in this peaceful environment. Continuing by boat and road, we reach the Valbona Valley, surrounded by spectacular alpine peaks. In the afternoon, we enjoy a gentle nature walk to Xhema Lake, a small blue lake nestled beneath limestone mountains.

    Today, we cross the border into Kosovo to explore two of its most charming historic cities, shaped by strong Ottoman heritage and local craftsmanship. Our journey begins in Gjakova, where we stroll through the Grand Bazaar (Çarshia e Madhe), the oldest in Kosovo, visit Hadum Mosque, and watch artisans working in traditional workshops. In the afternoon, we continue to Prizren, considered by many to be the cultural heart of the country. We spend the night walking its cobbled streets, crossing the emblematic Stone Bridge, and visiting Sinan Pasha Mosque, all against a beautiful backdrop of hills.

    We start in Pristina, where a brief guided visit introduces us to the city’s recent and complex history. Highlights include the impressive National Library, known for its unique brutalist architecture, and the symbolic NEWBORN monument. We head west towards Peja as the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous. In the afternoon, we explore the entrance of the Rugova Canyon in Prokletije National Park, one of Europe’s deepest canyons. The day ends with a visit to the Patriarchate of Peć, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    We continue into Montenegro via the picturesque Kulla Pass. The landscape becomes greener as we enter northern Montenegro and head to Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of the last remaining primeval rainforests in Europe. Centuries-old trees, dense vegetation, and a peaceful atmosphere make this a truly special natural setting. We enjoy a pleasant walk around Biograd Lake, whose calm waters reflect the forest and surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, we continue to the cozy mountain town of Kolasin, where we stay overnight.

    Today, we dedicate ourselves to discovering some of Montenegro’s most spectacular natural landscapes. We begin at the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe, and stop at the impressive Đurđevića Tara Bridge to enjoy panoramic views of the river far below. For those seeking a bit of adrenaline, there is an optional and very safe zipline across the canyon. Next, we continue to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO-protected area with peaks, forests, and glacial lakes. A walk around Black Lake (Crno Jezero) offers serene views as the surrounding mountains reflect in its dark waters.

    We begin a scenic descent toward the Adriatic Sea. Along the way, we stop at Ostrog Monastery, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Balkans. Spectacularly carved into a vertical cliff, the monastery offers a unique atmosphere and panoramic views of the valley below. Continuing south, the landscape quickly changes as rugged peaks give way to the coast. In the afternoon, we reach Kotor Bay, often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord, where mountains rise directly from the water. The evening is free to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

    We start with a guided walk through Kotor’s UNESCO-listed old town, exploring narrow stone streets, hidden squares, and impressive fortifications. Children will enjoy seeing the famous cats wandering the city. Those who wish can take the Kotor–Lovćen cable car, which offers spectacular views as it ascends from the bay to the mountains. In the afternoon, we head to the elegant town of Perast and take a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, the only artificial island in the Adriatic, shaped by local legends. Drive to Budva

    We wake up in Budva and start the day exploring its old town, surrounded by stone walls and overlooking the Adriatic Sea. From nearby viewpoints, we admire the iconic island of Sveti Stefan. Continuing south along the coast, the route passes coastal resorts and ancient olive groves. In Bar, we stop to see the millennial olive tree of Stara Maslina, believed to be over 2,000 years old. In the afternoon, we arrive in Ulcinj, a city shaped by centuries of trade and piracy. We explore its old town and fortress, where Cervantes is said to have been held captive, before heading north to spend the night.

    We return to Albania, taking a scenic route rather than the highway. Near Shëngjin, we stop at Rana e Hedhun, a unique natural phenomenon where a giant sand dune flows directly from the mountain to the sea. There is time to climb the dunes and enjoy the soft sand, a fun and unusual experience for all ages. Continuing along the coast, we stop for a relaxed seafood lunch in Shëngjin or Lezhë, known for fresh, local flavors. In the afternoon, we arrive at the coastal city of Durrës. The day ends with a peaceful stroll along the promenade as the sun sets over the Adriatic.

    Today, we focus on discovering the rich nature and biodiversity of Albania’s coast. Leaving Durrës, we travel south to the Divjakë-Karavasta Lagoon, a protected area of pine forests and wetlands. We enjoy nature and birdwatching, with the chance to see Dalmatian pelicans—a rare species—and, if we are lucky, flamingos resting in the shallow waters. The day is flexible, and more adventurous travelers can practice windsurfing or kitesurfing in the lagoon, known for its constant winds. In the late afternoon, we continue to the charming city of Berat for a sunset excursion and a relaxing evening.

    We set out to one of central Albania’s best-kept secrets: Holta Canyon. Surrounded by peaceful forests and carved by crystal-clear mountain waters, the canyon offers a tranquil and immersive natural environment. We spend the day exploring its narrow gorges, stone bridges, and riverside trails, enjoying gentle walks and taking time to simply appreciate the scenery. It’s an ideal day for nature lovers who enjoy discovering off-the-beaten-path locations. In the afternoon, we continue to Tirana, following scenic roads as the countryside gives way to Albania’s vibrant capital.
