day 1
Everest Base Camp TrekIn detail: Day 1: KATHMANDU - LUKLA - 2700m - PHAKDING, 2600m (4 hours). A spectacular flight and an impressive landing on a steep mountain runway bring us to the start of our trek at the village of Lukla (2850m). After meeting the crew, we head up the Dudh Koshi valley on a well-marked trail. Day 2: PHAKDING - NAMCHE BAZAR, 3440m (6 hours). We continue north along the Dudh Kosi river to Jorsale where we enter the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park. From there, it's a short walk to the confluence of two rivers, the Imja Drangpa (Imja Khola) and the Nangpo Tsangpo (Bhote Kosi), followed by a steep climb (about 2 hours) to Namche Bazaar, the main town of the Khumbu region. Namche is a prosperous Sherpa town and an important trading center with a weekly market on Saturdays. Day 3: REST DAY IN NAMCHE BAZAR Namche Bazaar, rest day and overnight. Namche Bazaar is nestled between two ridges among the giant peaks of the Khumbu. Once called the "Mecca of Nepalese trekkers," Namche now has an abundance of lodges and souvenir shops. It's an ideal place to spend a rest day, acclimatizing to the new altitude of 3450m before heading to Gokyo. Options for acclimatization walks include a visit to the Khunde hospital and also the one-hour walk to the Everest Hotel above Namche for sunset views of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Everest. Day 4: NAMCHE BAZAR - TYANGBOCHE, 3860m (6 hours) From Namche, the trail contours the side of the valley, overlooking the Dudh Kosi. Today, we have our first beautiful views of the great peaks of the Khumbu, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. Passing through several villages and many tea houses, we descend steeply to a bridge over the river at Phunki Tenga. The village is a great place for lunch, and here we can rest before making the steep climb to Tengboche. Although tiring, the hike on the zigzag trail has many distractions, with rhododendron bushes, beautiful birds, and superb mountain scenery. Tengboche is famous for its legendary monastery, the largest in the Khumbu. We stay near the monastery with Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam framed in the entrance of our guesthouse. Day 5: TYANGBOCHE - DINGBOCHE, 4300m (6 hours) After breakfast, we head towards Dingboche. Along the way, the majestic Ama Dablam dominates our day. We pass a small Sherpa village called Pangboche and continue to Dingboche for the night. Day 6: DINGBOCHE - LOBUCHE, 4930m (6 hours) We continue up the wide valley below the impressive peaks of Cholatse and Tawache on the left. We then turn right and climb more steeply towards the foot of the Khumbu glacier, at the top of which are many stone cairns, built in memory of the many Sherpas who died climbing Mount Everest. The trail then climbs gently along the glacier, up to the cluster of houses at Lobuche. Day 7: REST DAY IN LOBUCHE At Lobuche, we have already been walking for a week, slow ascent to acclimatize well. We have a magnificent view from Lobuche and Ama Dablam reveals itself from another angle here. The true summit of Kantega is visible far to the left. Lobuche is a summer village. The sunset on Nuptse (7879m) seen from Lobuche is a memorable sight. Day 8: TREK FROM LOBUCHE TO GORAKSHEP, 5170m (2 and a half hours) We continue our trek along the Khumbu glacier. We will reach our destination very early, but you can spend the rest of the day acclimatizing and preparing for the next day's adventure. Day 9: GORAKSHEP - KALAPATTAR (5500m) - GORAKSHEP (3 hours), TREK TO BASE CAMP 5300M AND RETURN TO GORAKSHEP (5 hours) Wake up early in the morning. The colors of sunrise begin to appear on Everest. We head to the summit of one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Everest region, Kala Pattar (5554m), then return to Gorakshep for breakfast. After breakfast, we continue to Everest Base Camp (5300m). Five to six hours of walking separate us from the base camp and the return, following the Khumbu glacier, sometimes on the moraine, sometimes on the glacier itself. The walk is particularly interesting for the views of the series of 15-meter-high ice blocks, a particular feature of Himalayan glaciers. The base camp of the highest mountain in the world is mainly inhabited by several expeditions from all over the world. Return to Gorakshep for the night. Day 10: GORAKSHEP - PHERICHE, 4280m (6h30) Today, we descend most of the way, retracing our steps to Duglha and descending to Pheriche. The Himalayan Rescue Association has a trekkers' aid post here and it is very interesting to visit. Day 11: PHERICHE - TYANGBOCHE, 3860m (4 hours) We continue to follow the river and, after crossing it, climb back up through the birch and rhododendron forest to Tengboche. Day 12: TYANGBOCHE - NAMCHE BAZAR, 3440m (5 hours) From Tengboche, we descend to the bridge over the Dudh Kosi at Phunki where there are water-powered prayer wheels, then we climb and contour the hill to Namche. Overnight in Namche. Day 13: NAMCHE BAZAR TREK - LUKLA 2840m (7 hours) From Namche Bazaar, the trail descends steeply to the village of Jorsale. Passing through the villages of Phakding (2640m) and Choplung, we reach Chaunrikharka and the trail that leads us to the Lukla airstrip. Day 14: LUKLA-KATHMANDU Early in the morning, flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. End of the trek.
