Trip Description

This tour starts and ends in Kigali. Visit Nyungwe, a vast Afro-montane forest. Nyungwe is the undisputed giant of Central Africa. Visit some cultural sites en route: the Butare Museum and the Nyanza Palace. Visit Volcanoes National Park where about 300 mountain gorillas live. You can track the gorillas, climb Mount Visoke, track golden monkeys or visit the Karisoke Research Center, which Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist, set up, or visit the local villages.   • day 1

    Arrival and transfer to Nyungwe.

    Arrival at Kanombe Airport (Kigali). Meet, greet and depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park. On the way, make a stop at places of interest such as local markets and the traditional palace of the former king of Rwanda in Nyanza. Pass by the green tea fields scattered on the hillsides, as well as the small wooden houses, unique to the surroundings of Nyungwe Forest.     Nature walk in the Nyungwe forest

    This guided hike in the forest allows you to observe a variety of animals and some of the three hundred species of birds found here, including the Rwenzori turaco and the black-and-white colobus. Take an accompanied walk in search of large groups of colobus monkeys — sometimes up to 400 individuals in a group. You can also go in search of chimpanzees. Picnic lunch. Return in the late afternoon.     Back to Kigali

    After breakfast, transfer back to Kigali. On the way, in Butare, visit the botanical gardens and a cultural museum. Arrive in Kigali in time for lunch. Then continue north to Kinigi via Ruhengeri. Enjoy the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known.     Transfer to Kinigi

    Transfer to the Kinigi Park headquarters to track gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Tracking gorillas through the forest, hills, and swamps can be difficult, strenuous, and tiring, sometimes taking up to 8 hours in the forest. But coming face to face with the great primates is worth it.     Gorilla trekking, Volcanoes National Park

    Have breakfast and meet at the Park offices for an information session, then head into the forest for a gorilla trek. An exciting hike through the refined foothills of the Virunga offers inspiring views in all directions. Then, suddenly, the trail enters the national park, captivating hikers in the strange closeness of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and the chatter of the rare golden monkey, and marked by the presence of fresh tracks from the elusive populations of mountain buffalo and elephants. Through openings in the forest canopy, the wonderful peaks are visible, easy to reach and among the highest summits in Africa, inviting you to climb. Trekking with gorillas is quite tiring, but it is worth it to meet these gentle giants. Spend time observing the gorillas, watching the adults feed their young, groom and rest while the young play in the vines in a playful and pleasing display.
