Unusual encounters in the land of green gold

Sri Lanka differently, between the unusual and originality.

Pearl of the Indian Ocean, island of scents, island of smiles, emerald island… So many nicknames that wonderfully describe the former Ceylon, to the point that one could sum it up as follows: Sri Lanka = excellent! The true riches of this country are first and foremost its people: smiling, welcoming, helpful, and always ready to help — provided you move a little away from the big urban centers. Next comes the incredible variety of its landscapes: from jungle to mountains, passing through panoramas reminiscent of Switzerland, not to mention the unique spectacle of tea plantations and its countless kilometers of coastline bathed by the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka is still home today to wild elephants, carefully preserved. And for those who wish to admire the country's majestic fauna and flora in complete safety, several natural parks offer an unforgettable experience. Sri Lanka, land of mysteries where magic happens!

Visit to the Dambulla cave temple, famous for its five caves among the best preserved in the world, as well as for its gigantic golden Buddha statue and the Golden Temple located at its feet. Dambulla is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock rises 160 m above the surrounding plains and houses more than 80 caves. The main attractions are found in 5 of them, containing 153 statues and numerous murals. Optional: in the afternoon, 4x4 safari in Wasgamuwa National Park (45 EUR per adult, to be paid on site). This park is a real favorite for our agency Insolite Lanka. Little known to the general public, it offers a peaceful atmosphere where you can fully enjoy the beauty of the safari without the crowds, and with greater respect for the animals in their natural habitat. We recommend going there in the early afternoon to end the experience with an unforgettable sunset behind the Knuckles mountains: a magical show, bathed in warm and soft colors. Wasgamuwa is renowned for the richness of its wildlife and its wild character. Unlike other parks, it stands out for the presence of many predators, including the famous sloth bears. 23 species of mammals have been recorded there, and it is particularly known for sheltering some of the largest elephants in Asia.

Higher up, a villager welcomes us into his home to introduce us to the preparation of a typical Sri Lankan dish. You will also have the opportunity to observe the kithul harvesting process. A real feat: the villager climbs along a trunk about ten meters high to extract the sap from the flower, which will be used to produce a slightly alcoholic drink, ideal to accompany the dish we have just cooked. After this tasting, we hit the road again towards the Mapalana waterfall, renowned for its exceptional freshness. On the way, we are warmly welcomed by the inhabitants of a small village. The hike leads to the fifth highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, with its 141 meters in height. The route crosses magnificent landscapes and flowering bushes. Upon arrival, we go up the river and enjoy a refreshing swim, enhanced by an unusual moment: small fish come to nibble at our skin, as if they were waiting for us. At the end of the day, return to the lodge by tuk-tuk. The afternoon ends with participation in various local traditional games, such as carrom or elle, alongside the lodge team.
