Mountain biking day at Los Nevados

Colombia, discover this 1-day trip

Trip Description

Descent through spectacular mountain, forest, and countryside landscapes. Descend from 4130 meters in Los Nevados National Park to 2130 meters in Manizales. Transport from Manizales included. Activities and highlights of the trip: • Walk through the páramos and cloud forests of Los Nevados National Park • 2000-meter descent over 30 kilometers • Enjoy the hot springs at Termales del Ruiz • Take a cable car and enjoy breathtaking views of Manizales. Overview: Manizales is a city of bikers. Bike shops abound, roads have bike lanes, and many people get around on two wheels. Road bikes, however, are not very common. With Los Nevados National Park so close to the city, it's easy to understand why mountain bikes reign in Manizales. Los Nevados is the most famous mountain park in Colombia and, if you want to cover a lot of ground and see many features of the park in one day, there is no better way than to cross it by mountain bike. On this adventure, you walk through a páramo, a unique mountainous landscape of succulents, lagoons, and rocky cliffs that exists only in Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. You also cross the cloud forest of Los Nevados, one of the most biodiverse places in the country, home to countless birds and exotic flowers. This bike ride starts at high altitude — 4130 meters above sea level. Fortunately, most of the day is spent descending. This pleasant, non-technical ride is an excellent way to discover Los Nevados and appreciate the countryside landscape of the coffee region.

Stay program

  • day 1

Ascent to Los Nevados and descent to Manizales.

Your guide will pick you up early in Manizales with your motorcycles loaded on the back of a 4x4 jeep. You will travel through picturesque mountain roads and stop for breakfast at a restaurant with a view. After breakfast, you will continue to Los Nevados National Park and unload your bikes at 2130 meters above sea level. The first part of your journey will take place on a paved road, a good place to get familiar with your bike and warm up your legs. Most of the route is downhill, with a short uphill section. You will ride on the pavement for only a few minutes before taking a dirt road. This is where the fun begins. From there, it's downhill on dirt paths and unpaved roads for the next four hours. You will cross a páramo at higher elevations. As you descend, the wide open páramo gives way to dense cloud forest and you will ride with trees surrounding you on both sides of the trail. You will have lunch at Termales del Ruiz, where you can bathe in a pool fed by a natural hot spring. After a long descent, you will leave the park and return to the pavement. You will pedal on a rolling country road with breathtaking views of the hills and farms. After about 5 hours of cycling, you will arrive in Manizales. One last surprise awaits you: a cable car ride offering a stunning view of the city and taking you to a high point near the bike garage. After dropping off your bikes, your guide will take you back to Manizales.
