Back at the port, we follow a track northwest to the end, a dead end: the viewpoint over the Los Exploradores glacier. Walk. In the afternoon, road to Puerto Bertrand, about 2h on a track with stops. The southern road descends due south, parallel to the great Northern Ice Field, 3000 km² of glaciers, whose summit is Mount Saint Valentin peaking at 4058 m: it is also the highest peak in all of Patagonia, both Chilean and Argentine. The vegetation is dense, the air very humid. Walk on the Island of the Dead, among the large trees hosting ferns, vines, and mosses on their trunks. A mysterious place whose story the guide will tell you… Visit this small, atypical port at the end of the world, wedged between the Northern Ice Field and the Southern Ice Field, located on the edge of the tumultuous Río Baker and in the middle of fjords and other channels! The site is astonishing! No streets, just wooden walkways and stairs: 8 km of walks and bridges between the seashore and the steep hills where the small houses are staggered. In the afternoon, a 2.5 km hike to climb to Cerro Vigia and discover a 360º panoramic view of the mountains, the fishing cove, the Baker delta, the islands, and channels. From there, excursion to the O’Higgins glacier, 3 km wide and 70 m high! It is part of the Southern Ice Field, 13,000 km² straddling both countries, a remnant of the ancient ice cap that covered all of Patagonia more than 10,000 years ago. It is 2 hours of sailing one way to reach the foot of this giant, among the icebergs calving from its side. 1 hour on site, then 2 hours of sailing back to Candelario, arriving around 5 p.m. From there, return by land to Villa O’Higgins. Same accommodation. Meals not included.
