The Most Beautiful Beaches in Costa Rica

With more than 1200 km of coastline, Costa Rica offers a variety of about 300 beaches, spread west on the Pacific Ocean and east on the Caribbean Sea. The turquoise waters, averaging 28°, are perfect for numerous water activities but also for relaxation. The pura vida lifestyle has cultivated a nature and wellness tourism where surfing, yoga, and family activities blend. An ideal destination to recharge and discover unforgettable landscapes in a preserved nature. Let's discover together the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, it's hard not to find happiness there.

Manuel Antonio

One of the most popular in Costa Rica, this superb white sand beach on the Pacific coast is accessible only by crossing the Manuel Antonio National Park. You can enjoy the crystal-clear waters while admiring the lush nature alongside monkeys and other raccoons. A must-see!

Tropical Beach Manuel Antonio

Tamarindo

One of the most touristy beaches in the country, in the Nicoya Peninsula bordering the Pacific, a real favorite place for surfing enthusiasts. Even if purists might avoid the place, it's worth seeing and you'll find lots of entertainment, bars, and restaurants. For a bit more tranquility, don't hesitate to escape to Playa Langosta, accessible on foot in 20 minutes, more deserted and ideal for horseback riding.

Sunset on the beach

Playa Conchal

Located in the northwest of the country, playa conchal is named after the shells, conchas in Spanish, that line the shore. Very suitable for diving and snorkeling, it is very well preserved and enjoys unique brightness as it is sunny for more than 11 hours a day! The site is magnificent and offers many activities and exploration of marine life. Don't forget your mask, snorkel, and fins!

Santa Teresa and Malpais

You'll need to venture off the beaten path to get there, but it's worth the trip; the sand is immaculately white and the beach is lined with palm trees. Playa Santa Teresa has become one of the favorite destinations for surfers but also for yoga enthusiasts. You can stay there for a while and maybe never want to leave...

Santa Teresa Beach

Playa Uvita and Hermosa

Very surprising from above because the two beaches, located in Marino Ballena Park, form a whale tail! You can even have the chance to spot humpback whales at certain times of the year. An ideal place for relaxation, nestled between the Pacific and beautiful mangroves to explore, you'll find enough activity for your well-being and can indulge in stand-up paddleboarding, very relaxing.

Palm trees on the beach

Playa de Dominical

Located on the southern Pacific coast, it is renowned as one of the best surf spots, monitored all year round by lifeguards. The small hippie village is ideal for enjoying the setting in a relaxed atmosphere, savoring seafood or sipping a drink with feet in the water. A true little corner of paradise!

Playa Cahuita

Let's move to the east coast; beaches are fewer but worth a visit. The Cahuita National Park on the southern coast is bordered by stunning beaches, with playa blanca, playa negra, and playa vargas being the main ones. If you want to enjoy a black sand beach, choose playa negra; playa vargas has more rocks making it ideal for snorkeling. As for playa blanca, relax while watching monkeys. Watch out for your bags; they like to rummage!

Punta Uva

One of the most beautiful beaches in the country, accessible through the jungle, guaranteed change of scenery! Everything is splendid there: fine sand, turquoise waters, lush vegetation. You may have the chance to spot green macaws there, parrots that have been recently reintroduced into the natural park as their species is highly threatened.

Horseback riding on the beach

Puerto Viejo

This is THE surfers' spot on the Caribbean coast; they flock there in December and January to surf salsa brava, the spot's most anticipated wave. The beach is located near a small fishing village blending Jamaican and Hispanic cultures; relaxation, surfing, reggae, and numerous activities suitable for all travelers are offered on-site. Note that only experienced surfers should try salsa brava.

Playa Cocles

Close to Puerto Viejo on the southern Caribbean coast, it offers a bit more calm and tranquility. Beginner surfers prefer it over Puerto Viejo, which is more dangerous.

Choose among these natural wonders; one piece of advice: explore Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches on both coasts as their atmospheres differ greatly. You won't be disappointed with your trip; these various stretches of fine sand bordered on one side by turquoise waters and on the other by tropical forest where palm trees create an idyllic postcard setting.
