Trip description

The magnificent EWG hiking trail (Grande Traversata Elbana) crosses the island from east to west and allows you to discover various landscapes, looking for new Mediterranean scents and colours, far from noise and agitation. The landforms that form the backbone of the island offer magnificent views. The Elbe at your pace, in the heart of a powerful nature.

At the beginning of Cavo, on the north-east tip of the island, this first step makes it possible to learn with the fragrant scrub of the island and include a succession of climbs and descents. A wide panorama is offered at the sight of the inas: to the east, the iron mines of Rio Nell'Elba and Rio Marina in the West on Portoferraio. The summit of the day: Cima del Monte, which, despite its 516 meters altitude, requires a lot of energy before it can enjoy the view on Porto Azzurro, point of arrival. Take 7 hours for this day.

Departure from San Martino, from the Emperor's country residence in exile, from where trails go through a thick pine forest, to Monte San Martino, the heart of the island. From here continue south to the sandy beach of Marina di Campo, with the sea in background and a panorama stretching from Capoliveri, Braulio to the islands of the southern Tuscan archipelago. 6 hours of trek are expected for this second step.

Monte Capanne! You will discover a real playground for lovers of the mountain... but in the middle of the sea. From the Village of Granite workers, San Piero, the road goes through old quarries that talk about a past of stone cutters and carriers, under the watchful eye of the sheep. The landscape, made of smooth granite rocks, is covered with low and fragrant vegetation, leaving. At the peak of Monte Capanne, the peak of the island (1 019 metres), we discover a wonderful panoramic terrace overlooking Corsica, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo and Giglio. It is time to start the descent in the direction of Poggio under oak and chestnut woods. Plan 7 hours of walking in all.
