The discovery of Emilia Romagna must begin with this vital city. The ochre walls of its magnificent historic centre vibrate with the cosmopolitan youth who are its university, the oldest in Europe. It is nice to walk in the historic centre and discover the food that is renowned for the so-called red city (due to the colour of its monuments... and its political leanings) in the turn of a market, and why not garnish its picnic basket to that delle Erbe, open every day of the week.
Second day in the capital of Emilia Romagna. Visit of museums that you missed the day before and relax on the terrace.
At half an hour from Bologna, well protected by its high walls inherited from the wars, Ferrara deserves a detour. The best way to explore its quiet streets is the bicycle, to rent on site. The family castle of Este and the Renaissance palaces make Ferrara a dive in another world. If the envy takes you, taste il pasticcio di maccheroni, local speciality in a trattoria in the heart of the city.
A second day in the region will take you to the Po Delta, take a boat trip and visit Comacchio, "Little Venice", where fresh fish mood in one of the many restaurants on the water side.
An exceptional collection of basilicas, baptisteries and other mausoleums whose mosaics and frescoes remain remarkably well preserved, Ravenna remains an essential stage for its Byzantine treasures. For those who love sun bathing, you will be able to spend a day at the seaside, Marina di Ravenna or Marina Romea.
Let's dedicate the morning to the visit of Faenza and its Ceramics Museum. In the afternoon, head to the small village of Brisighella, one of the most beautiful of Italy, with its fortress perched on the top of the hill where you will discover a magnificent panorama on the valley around.
The gastronomic stage is evident in the city of ham and Parmesan... but Parma is above all a city of art with a peaceful atmosphere, where it makes good strolls in the historic centre between Piazza Garibaldi and the Duomo.
The second day will be dedicated to discovering the medieval villages in the tour of the castles of Parma and Piacenza. You could visit Torrechiara and Bardi, in Parma province, and Grazzano Visconti and Celebrated, in that of Piacenza.
